Dear Harbor Springs Public Schools Families,

I have a very special file folder that I keep at home. In that folder are printed notes and emails from families, peers, and even former students. It is my "encouragement folder." When I look through it, I am reminded of the special people I have had the privilege to serve and to work alongside. The notes in that folder did not come with financial gifts; instead, they delivered the gifts of encouragement, and kindness.

May 5 through 9 is Teacher Appreciation Week. In Harbor Springs Public Schools, it is our tradition to celebrate all staff during this time, which is why we refer to it as Staff Appreciation Week. I believe this tradition matters because teachers cannot teach, and students cannot learn, without our bus drivers, custodians, paraprofessionals, secretaries, food service workers, grounds staff, and administrators. The mission of every public school, student growth and learning, is only possible when the entire team works together.

My hope is that the students and families of Harbor Springs Public Schools will help celebrate our staff by sharing notes and emails of appreciation with those who teach, drive, feed, care for, and assist your children in hundreds of different ways. I hope the encouragement folders of our HSPS staff grow during this week. Your written words recognizing their work will encourage them and remind them that what they do truly makes a difference.

In addition to these notes and emails, the Board of Education is planning to provide small treats for all staff throughout the week. The Board is grateful for the opportunity to express its appreciation for the vital contributions of every staff member.

It is a privilege for me to be part of this school district and community. I am grateful for the people who serve our students each day, and I am grateful for the families who take the time to encourage them. Sometimes the simplest words of appreciation are the ones that stay with us the longest.
Sincerely,

Scott Korpak, Ed.D.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As part of Harbor Springs Public Schools commitment to student and community safety, we have completed the steps to achieve designation as a MiHEART Safe School. A HEARTSafe designation recognizes a school’s efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death of the young (SCDY) by preparing for a cardiac emergency.

To ensure preparation for a cardiac emergency, Harbor Springs Public Schools provides and maintains a number of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) in each building along with staff members who are able to recognize the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest, alert emergency services, and provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and utilize the AED.

Part of this preparation includes practice drills with our cardiac emergency response team. Over the next few weeks, we will be conducting a “real life scenario” practice drill in each of our three buildings during school hours. The drill may include support from local EMS and police services, as they are both integral parts of our emergency plan. These drills allow us to fine tune our response in case of emergency. Students will not be actively participating in the drill, but they may see our emergency response team in action.

Please reach out to our school nurse, Jennifer Wedge, if you have any questions. She can be reached at jwedge@harborps.org or 231-526-4751.

Hello HSPS Staff and Families,

Even when we measure twice, sometimes the cut still is not right. I have experienced that more times than I care to admit, and I always feel for others when something similar happens.

The Harbor Light Newspaper published a story today stating that there are two Char-Em ballot questions on the May 5, 2026, election. That is not correct.

On May 5, 2026, voters across Char-Em ISD will be asked to consider one ballot initiative. That initiative is a request to renew the Career and Technical Education, CTE, millage that has supported vocational education in our region for 30 years. Voters first approved this millage in 1996, and it has been renewed every four years since.

For more information about the upcoming CTE ballot initiative, please visit:
https://www.charemisd.org/career-and-technical-education-millage-four-year-renewal-approved/

In a time when we all receive more information than we can possibly keep up with, it is important to stay focused on what truly matters. Preparing students for successful careers is important work. My hope is that this error can serve as a helpful reminder to share accurate information with family and friends, specifically that there is only one Char-Em ballot initiative on May 5, and to encourage others to review the actual ballot question for themselves.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
