HARBOR SPRINGS — It’s a big week within the Harbor Springs athletic program.

Both basketball teams find themselves in key Northern Shores Conference games they’ll need to have to stay atop the league’s standings, then Friday will also bring a big annual night for Rams athletics.

The annual Harbor Springs Athletics Hall of Fame presentation will take place between the junior varsity and varsity girls basketball games Friday, Jan. 31 against Elk Rapids. The junior varsity is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip and varsity a 7 p.m. tip.

This year’s Harbor Springs Athletic Hall of Fame class includes Kalie Grambeau, Fred Troup and the 1987 girls ski team.

Grambeau was a 2004 Harbor Springs graduate that stood out in soccer, basketball and skiing in the program.

She was a three-time all-state selection in soccer, helping the Rams to the state finals as a freshman in 2001, where the Rams fell in a 2-1 overtime game to Clawson. She also helped lead the Rams to the semifinals in 2002 and 2003.

Grambeau later went on to play at Division I Purdue University, competing in 80 games over her career with five goals and eight assists.

She was also an all-conference basketball player for Harbor Springs, then helped the Rams’ ski team earn four team state championships. As an individual on the hill, she claimed giant slalom state titles in 2003 and 2004 and a slalom title in ’03.

She also earned runner-up finishes in slalom and giant slalom in ’04 and ’02, respectively.

Troup, a longtime Harbor Springs High School throwers coach in track and field, will enter the Harbor HOF as a coach.

Troup has coached some of the best to come through Harbor in discus and shot put, including his son, Stephen, who holds the Harbor shot put record (54’6.5”).

He’s also coached state champions Caylin Bonser (discus 2016), Erika Lechner (shot put 2016, 2017) and Jacob Lechner (shot put 2016), while Jay Lechner earned back to back runner-up discus finishes (2010, 2011) at the finals. Jay later went on to earn All-American honors at GVSU.

Bonser also holds the Division 4 state record in this discus (141’6”) and Erika holds the Division 4 state record in the sot put (44’1.5”).

The final inductee entering the Hall of Fame will be the 1987 girls ski team, which earned an open class state championship. The ’87 team was coached by Bill Shepler and assistants Dour Beer and Brewster McVicker.

Team members for the champs included Lesley Fischer, Ashley Andreae, Barb Todd, Lisa Witty, Ellen Willderom, Mandy Baker, Lisa Brady and Debra Fischer.

Harbor Springs dominated the competition at the finals, particularly in the slalom race, where they earned 26-62 finish over Traverse City.

The 1987 team was Harbor Springs’ first-ever state champion in the sport, helping pave the way for eight more state title on the girls side and another five boys skiing state titles.

Along with the hall of fame on Friday, the Harbor Springs boys (11-2, 6-1) meet Boyne City on Tuesday at home and travel to Elk Rapids on Thursday.

Harbor Springs’ girls (10-2, 6-0) head to Boyne City on Tuesday, before bringing in the Elks Friday.
