In this day of state funding woes, a school system cannot continue to provide quality programming and services for its students without significant support from parents and the local community. We’re fortunate to have the Harbor Springs Education Foundation whose sole mission is to enhance local education programs with direct monetary support. You may have recently received their end of the year information flyer detailing some of the many projects they have funded. A few of these include: scholarships for graduating seniors and needy preschool families, supplementary textbooks and materials, specialized science equipment, school play costumes, tuition for ACT preparation classes, and Youth Chorale uniforms. Purchases such as these are often difficult to fund from already tight school program budgets.

A foundation, such as HSEF, creates benefits beyond just monetary assistance. Some of these benefits include:

  • Providing a legal professional mechanism to collect and administer funds (HSEF is an approved 501C3 charitable organization).
  • Making available some grant opportunities for which a school district itself is not eligible.
  • A school foundation will avoid some legal and political limitations that school district funds are subject to.
  • Building bridges to new, non-parent audiences including: single people, empty nesters, senior citizens, seasonal residents, alumni, and the business community.
  • Providing a means for people to show their support for the schools and invest directly in our students.

Ongoing fund raising is the key component to the Harbor Springs Education Foundation’s work. In addition to their Annual Fall Golf Outing, the following are methods of fund raising:

  • Gift or cash for a special program or for general use
  • Gift or cash to the annual, capital or endowment funds
  • Gift of stocks, bonds, real estate or assets
  • In-kind contributions
  • Pledges for consecutive year funding
