Geometry

Transitional Math (grade 9)

This class taken with teacher recommendation only. It is designed to provide the student with the basic concepts needed for future study in mathematics. Students taking this class will develop the skills necessary for success in Prealgebra. Study will focus on binary operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Statistics, measurement, percent, ratios, proportions, probability, and basic geometry topics will also be covered thoroughly. An introduction to integer operations and algebra topics will be included. This class is for elective credit only. Two years of math beyond Transitional Math are required for graduation.

Pre-Algebra (grades 9-10)

This course is designed for the student not yet ready for Algebra I. By using data graphs and other mathematical models, students learn to generalize number patterns and to represent observed patterns. These informal experiences with algebraic concepts help students gain confidence and build the background necessary to be successful in algebra.

Algebra I (grades 9-10)

Algebra I is the first class of a four-year sequence for the college-bound student. However, a major concern of Algebra I is to make sure that the program accommodates a wide range of student abilities and interests. The course covers topics such as operations with real numbers, solving linear equations, graphing relations and functions, systems of equations, factoring polynomials, rational expressions, radicals, and quadratic equations. The student successfully completing this course should be ready to take Geometry the next year.

Geometry (grades 9-11)

Prerequisite: Algebra I
Geometry deals with concepts of the Euclidean plane and space. Topics will include parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, right triangles, circles, areas and volume, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, construction, and similar polygons. The focus in geometry is to introduce the student to formal proof and to give the valuable geometric background which is so important for application to other subjects. The student successfully completing this course should be ready to continue in Algebra II the next year.

Consumers Math/ Integrated Math (grades 11-12)

Prerequisite: Two years of high school math or teacher recommendation

1st Semester - Consumers Math
Operations with fractions, decimals, and percents will be applied to determine solutions to problems associated with various occupations, financing, taxes, insurance, and other consumer related topics. Additional topics may include computer spreadsheet applications related to loans, budgets, and investments. Algebra skills will be used in most applications

2nd Semester - Integrated Math
A semester-long survey of the integrated mathematics topics included on the high school MEAP test. Topics include statistics, probability, basic geometry, graphing, measurement, and algebraic expressions. Basic algebraic operations will also be studied.

Algebra II (grades 10-12)

Prerequisite: Geometry
Algebra II will cover such topics as linear equations, polynomials, functions, rational expressions, analytic geometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, series and sequences, matrices and determinants, and trigonometry. It is important that the student acquire a high level of understanding of these topics in order to be ready for the fourth year of high school mathematics which is Precalculus. Since mathematics builds on previously learned symbols, concepts and skills, it is important that the student view this course as necessary for any further development in mathematics in high school, trade school, or college.

Pre-Calculus (grades 11-12)

Prerequisite: Algebra II
Precalculus will prepare the student for entrance into a college calculus course. Topics of study will include coordinate geometry, polynomials, functions, exponents and logarithms, trigonometric function, polar coordinates, conic sections, sequences and series, limits, and an introduction to calculus. This important class will lay the groundwork for any further study of mathematics in high school or college. Any students who take this course in the 11th grade should then plan to take Introduction to Calculus in the senior year.

Calculus (grade 12)

Prerequisite: Precalculus
Introduction to Calculus is designed to give students an intuitive understanding of the basic concepts in calculus. Students should understand that this class will not be the same as that which would be found in Calculus I at the university level. The student should not be under the impression that it will be possible to side-step the first semester calculus course in college. Topics of study will include sequences and series, functions, logarithms, limits, continuity, differentiation, integration, and applications of the integral and derivative.

Students will be offered an Advanced Placement (AP) option for those choosing to attempt the more rigorous preparation offered by the AP curriculum.
