Spring 2008
A new Lifeguard Class will begin in early April, following Spring Break.
A minimum of 4 participants is needed for a new class. The course usually runs 3 nights a week for 4 weeks. Upon completion of the course, you will hold a certification in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid. The Lifeguard and First Aid certification are good for 3 years. The CPR certification needs to be renewed every year.
Qualifications for the class are as follows.
The candidate must be 15 years old.
The candidate must swim 300 yds (12 lengths) continuously in the following order:
100 yds of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick
100 yds of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick technique.
100 yds of either front crawl or breaststroke. This may be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke.
The candidate must swim the 300 yds without stopping.
The candidate must swim 20 yds using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 ft, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface, and swim 20 yds back to the starting point.
*When returning to the starting point, the candidate must hold the 10-pound brick with both hands and must keep his or her face above the water. The candidate has 1 minute and 40 seconds to complete this task.
Cost
The cost for the class is $120.00 which includes the price of the book.
